Outside the office of the ferry company, a tally is kept of the number of passengers and cars on each sailing of that day. But the entry for the 18.15 departure simply says “Merry Christmas.”

The weather was grey and there is not much light in Denmark at Christmas time. But we tried to make the best of it.

The arrival of the ferry always draws people, no matter how many times they have seen this everyday occurrence.
Because Denmark consists of hundreds of islands, there are many ferries in operation around the country, even though there are now bridges on the most important crossing routes.
