New Year’s Day: cleaning the street and the body

It is my habit on New Year’s Day to get out early to get some fresh air and to have a look at the cleanup activities from the night before. My brother-in-law was still sleeping, but my sister and I were in the car on our way downtown by 9 a.m. The cleanup after the big party was in full swing, albeit using decidedly low-tech methods.
But not everyone was in a “cleanup” mode. We saw several drunks out and about, like the guy on the left trying to convince the taxi driver to drive him somewhere or the rather sad couple dancing outside Wroclaw’s train station. There is a serious side to this: alcoholism is endemic in Poland.
We finished the day by taking a late afternoon walk around Ostrow Tumski, an island on the Oder river which contains Wroclaw’s cathedral, the archbishops residence (bottom left) and several other church institutions.
